Digital Food Catalog

The Digital Food Catalog is a tool that allows you to easily and intuitively explore the nutritional composition and ingredient list of various categories of food products available in Portugal.

Our goal was to provide, on a single platform, , easy-to-understand , unbiased , and completely free nutritional information , in accordance with international best practices.

The new version of the Catalog provides several interactive dashboards for data analysis, allowing users to track the evolution of the nutritional quality of foods , as well as the distribution of foods according to the Nutri-Score and Nutritional Traffic Light categories, the evolution of the number of food products in each food category, and the presence of simplified nutritional labeling systems on food product packaging.

To view this information, simply select one of the available categories from the menu.

Over 3000 food products

This tool gathers information on more than 3300 food products available on the Portuguese market, including energy value, fat content, saturated fatty acids, sugar, protein, fiber and salt, ingredient list, as well as their respective Nutri-Score and Nutritional Traffic Light classification , distributed across nine food categories:

Information Update

The tool is intended to be dynamic and updated periodically , in order to cover a growing number of food categories and incorporate up-to-date data on the nutritional composition of products.

Despite this effort, the food supply is constantly changing, and the most recent data presented in this Catalogue was collected in 2024 .

Therefore, products currently available on the market may occasionally have compositions different from those indicated here.

We therefore recommend further consultation of the detailed composition found on food product labels.

This tool retains previously available information from previous years (2022), allowing for comparisons of the nutritional profile of certain foods over time.

Evolution of the Food Catalog

The number of food products available at each data collection point is significantly different. In the information currently available, relating to 2024, there has been an increase of approximately 1000 products, allowing for greater market coverage, but at the same time potentially introducing bias into comparative analyses. A detailed analysis will be made available later, including a sub-analysis of food products for which information was collected simultaneously in 2022 and 2024.

Starting today, consumers and professionals in the fields of health, education, and others related to food will have access to a decision-making support tool that is simultaneously detailed, rigorous, and easy to use— a tool that promotes more informed choices and contributes to a more transparent and healthy food environment .

European Food Monitoring System

The Digital Food Catalogue was developed from data collected by the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences of the University of Porto (FCNAUP) and the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP) , institutions that participated in the EU Joint Action Best-ReMaP and PreventNCD , European projects involving 25 countries of the European Union , one of whose main objectives was the creation of a European system for monitoring the food supply .

With the Digital Food Catalog, choosing well is easier!
